Shut your mouth!

SHUT YOUR MOUTH!

It’s probably been a while since someone said this to you... but it’s one of the most important things you can do to improve your health!!!

Let me explain... A fundamental element of breathing is the nasal breath.

Think about it... The nose was designed for breathing, whilst the mouth was designed for talking and eating.

Although mouth breathing has its place, when we’re exerting ourselves it helps to get oxygen in quickly... but long term it’s not an effective or efficient strategy, and can even lead to problems.

When you breathe through your mouth, it alerts the brain that the body is under stress and stimulates ‘fight or flight’ mode. If you breathe through your mouth regularly, your brain thinks it’s under threat and your innate survival instincts kick in, your nervous system is over sensitised and it can lead to exhaustion of the body’s systems.

Mouth breathing can lead to you over breathing (yes it’s a thing), upper thoracic breathing (ineffectual), snoring and sleep apnea.

At this time of year having a blocked nose can cause you to mouth breathe, but this doesn’t help us to alleviate our sinuses, remove the blockage or help to filter, warm and moisten the air- which can cause us other issues.

Becoming aware of your breath and breathing mindfully can help you to optimise your breath and promote health.
